Trying to conceive is an exciting time, and it's natural to want to do everything you can to improve your chances of conceiving and having a healthy pregnancy.

One important aspect of preparing for pregnancy is minimising your exposure to toxic substances. 

Here are a few steps you can take to reduce your exposure to toxins while trying to conceive and beyond:

 

1. Use natural or home made cleaning products

Many commercial cleaning products contain chemicals that can be harmful if inhaled or ingested. Look for natural alternatives, such as baking soda, lemon and vinegar, to clean your home. Avoid synthetic fragrances, which are often used in cleaning products and air fresheners.

 

2. Avoid plastic containers and utensils

They can leach chemicals into your food. Use stainless steel, glass or porcelain containers for food storage instead.

 

3. Eat a healthy diet

Try to buy organic fruits and vegetables, as they are grown without the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilisers. Wash all produce, organic or otherwise, thoroughly before consuming. Avoid processed and sugary foods.

 

4. Try to use natural and non-toxic personal care products

Avoid products with phthalates and parabens, which are common in personal care and cleaning products.

 

5. Avoid smoking and alcohol

Smoking and alcohol can affect fertility and increase the risk of complications during pregnancy. If you smoke, try to quit before you start trying to conceive. If you drink alcohol, limit your intake to no more than one drink per day.

 

6. Avoid exposure to toxic chemicals

Some chemicals, such as lead, mercury, and certain pesticides, can be harmful to foetal development. Take steps to reduce your exposure to these chemicals, such as choosing products that are free of these toxins.

 

7. Protect yourself from radiation

Some sources of radiation, such as X-rays and certain medical treatments, can be harmful to a developing foetus. Talk to your healthcare provider about any potential risks and ask about alternative treatments if necessary.

 

8. Be mindful of the products you bring into your home

Read labels carefully to make informed decisions about the products you use, in your home and on your body.

 

9. Use a HEPA filter in your vacuum cleaner and air purifier.

 

By taking these steps, you can help reduce your exposure to toxins in your home, which may increase your chances of conceiving and having a healthy pregnancy.
